Sigulda (RWH) The Latvian Bobsleigh Federation has chosen three young athletes for the new discipline of women’s monobob. As the federation reported on bobslejs.lv, head coach Sandis Prusis will work with BMX cyclists Vineta Pētersone and Vanesa Buldinska, as well as javelin thrower Katrina Sirma.

Vineta Pētersone (19) won several titles and medals at BMX European and World Championships. Vanesa Buldinska (18) won 2017 European Championships Bronze in the Women’s Juniors. The 23 years old Katrina Sirma has a personal best in javelin throw of 55.87 meters.

"All three have already achieved something in their sports”, said coach Sandis Prusis regarding the new Latvian bobsleigh hopefuls. “In bobsleigh, they have to learn and prove everything from scratch."

“I really knew nothing about women's bobsleigh”, said Vineta Pētersone. “But it’s a joy and from BMX I have a lot of athletics and strength. I hope, also other girls can do it!”

The monobob training in Latvia will start in the next days already. In Summer, the International Olympic Committee IOC had decided to add the discipline Women’s Monobob to the Olympic programme for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing (CHN). ©RWH2018
