Beijing (RWH) The Organising Committee of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 (BOCOG) revealed its Olympic torch design. As BOCOG and the International Olympic Committee IOC announced, the torch was presented during a ceremony held in the Beijing 2008 Summer Games National Aquatics Centre which has been transformed into the “Ice Cube” for next year’s Olympic Winter Games.
The revealing of the torch was part of the 1-year-to-go celebrations for the Winter Games. On this occasion, IOC President Thomas Bach formally invited the National Olympic Committees (NOC) of the world and their winter sports athletes to participate in next year’s Games. The winning Olympic torch design, selected from 182 entries in a global competition launched back in April 2020, was commended by Beijing 2022’s judges for its combination of Chinese aesthetic value, traditional cultural connotations and advanced technology. The 2022 Olympic torch spirals upward to resemble two overlapping fluttering ribbons and representing a metaphor of fire and ice. The inner red ribbon evokes rising flames, with the outer one plated in silver to produce a striking contrast.
