Lausanne (RWH) The International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation IBSF is setting up a new Department for Materials, Technology and Innovation. This was decided by the IBSF Executive Committee at its meeting on 26 March. Head of the new department will be Bobsleigh Olympic Champion Christoph Langen (GER) from 1 June 2021.
The IBSF Material, Technology & Innovation Department will work in close cooperation with the Sport Department on issues such as restructuring material control processes or revising the material rules. The development of future material regulations is also one of the department's tasks. Here, for example, parts and material components are to be standardised in order to control the costs of sports equipment production. The aim is to develop a sustainable concept to make it easier for athletes in the future to enter the sport of bobsleigh and skeleton.
In addition, the area of sports technology and innovation will play a vital role in the new department to meet the needs of a modern sports federation in an increasingly digitalised world.
Christoph Langen won two Olympic gold medals as a bobsleigh pilot (1998 in 4-man bobsleigh, 2002 in 2-man bobsleigh) and seven World Championship and European Championship titles each. During his coaching era in Germany from 2010 to 2016, his athletes won eight World Championship titles and eleven European Championship gold medals. Most recently, Christoph Langen was head coach and junior national coach of the Swiss bobsleigh teams and successfully led some of his young athletes to the World Cup and World Championship teams of Swiss Sliding. ©RWH2021
