Shenyang (RWH) In December, the first selections fir the new bobsleigh team of the People’s Republic of Cina took place in Shenyang, about 700 km northeast of the capital Beijing. Responsible for the first selection among 150 candidates from athletics and other winter sports is Manuel Machata from Germany. The former bobsleigh pilot, 2011 Wolrd Champion, European Champion and Overall World Cup winner in four man bob, ended his career as athlete a few months ago and then signed on as head coach of the Chinese Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association. "Through these tests, we mainly want to know the explosive power, strength and speed of the athletes. We will also consider their height, weight and age to make a final decision," said Manuel Machata in a release on, following the selections including jumps and sprints with and without pulling weights.
On second day of selections, special technique tasks of bobsleigh, including physical coordination and push technique, were part of the programme. Subsequently, head coach Machata will hold a final team trial with ten men and ten women to form the first Chinese bobsleigh team.
The first icetrack tests are planned for spring 2016, long-term objective of the team are the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. ©RWH2015-2016
