Eighth win in eight races - Kripps second in Calgary ahead of Lochner
Calgary (RWH) For the first time in World Cup history, Olympic Champion Francesco Friedrich has raced a perfect season in the 2-man bobsleigh. Unbeaten in the small sled since January 2018, Friedrich triumphed in all eight races of the BMW IBSF World Cup 2018/2019 and now - as the top bobsleigh pilot - can lift the impressive Crystal Globe trophy for the overall win, with a perfect score of 1800 points. Francesco Friedrich has now taken every major title in bobsleigh: Olympic Champion, World Champion, European Champion and now, overall World Cup Champion.
The World Cup final in Calgary (CAN) saw Friedrich and teammate Thorsten Margis take the top spot ahead of Justin Kripps and Ryan Sommer (0.09 seconds behind). At the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang, Friedrich and Kripps notched up the same time, making them joint gold medallists in 2-man bobsleigh.
Johannes Lochner and Christopher Weber (GER, 0.23 seconds behind) finished third in Calgary.
The BMW IBSF World Cup in Calgary also marked the first appearance on the track for two duos from China, with Beijing set to host the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics. Yijun Shao and Wei Liu finished the race in 14th place, while Kaizhi Sun - U23 World Champion in 4-man bobsleigh - came in 23rd with Zhitao Wu.
In the overall standings for the 2018/2019 BMW IBSF World Cup, Oskars Kibermanis (LAT, 1564 points) was overall runner-up behind winner Friedrich. Nico Walther (GER, 1232) secured third place.
