Neustadt (RWH) Dietmar Schauerhammer, 1984 Olympic Champion in 2-man and 4-man bobsleigh with pilot Wolfgang Hoppe, celebrates his 65th birthday on August 12.
Schauerhammer, previously a decathlete, in 1981 joined the national bobsleigh team in the then still existing GDR. With pilot Wolfgang Hoppe he won not only two Olympic gold medals but also Olympic silver in 1988 in the 4-man bob. In addition, the Hoppe/Schauerhammer duo became World Champions in 1985 and 1986 and European Champions in 1986 and 1987 in the 2-man bob. In 1987 the quartet of pilot Hoppe with Dietmar Schauerhammer, Roland Wetzig and Bogdan Musiol won the European Championship title in 4-man bob. ©RWH2020
