Para Sport European Championships planned for World Cup opener in Lillehammer
Lausanne (RWH) The International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation IBSF is applying for the inclusion of Para Bobsleigh in the programme of the 2026 Paralympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina (ITA). The IBSF has submitted the application documents to the International Paralympic Committee IPC in due time. A decision is expected by the end of September.
According to current planning, eight races in the IBSF Para-Sport World Cup are scheduled for the winter of 2020/2021. The European Championship has been awarded to Lillehammer (NOR) and is therefore on the agenda as race-in-race right at the opening weekend of the World Cup (November 7-8, 2020). The Para Sport World Championships is planned to be held for the first time together with the BMW IBSF World Championships in Lake Placid (USA, February 1-14, 2021) next winter.
The Para Sport World Cup for athletes with disabilities was established at the 2015/2016 season. Lonnie Bissonnette (CAN) became first Para Bobsleigh World Champion in 2016, Eric Eierdam (USA) won in Para Skeleton. The first European Para Bob Champion was the Latvian Arturs Klots in 2017.
In IBSF Para Sport, female and male athletes compete on equal terms. The first female World Cup winner in Para Bobsleigh was Annija Krumina from Latvia in November 2017. In 2018, Norwegian Para Bobsleigh pilot Guro Frønsdal was the first woman to win a World Championships medal, finishing with bronze in Lillehammer (NOR). ©RWH2020
