Schönau (RWH) With Rudi Lochner, one of the most enigmatic figures of the international bobsleigh scene will celebrate his 70th birthday on March 29, 2023. Together with brakeman Markus Zimmermann, Lochner became 2-man bobsleigh World Champion and Olympic silver medallist. The uncle of the current 2-man bobsleigh World Champion Johannes Lochner was known for snappy sayings and unusual actions.
In 1992 in Albertville, he was just 39 hundredths of a second behind Olympic Champions Gustav Weder/Donat Acklin of Switzerland. The year before, Lochner/Zimmermann had won World Championship gold in Altenberg. Lochner is said to have made a deal with his sponsor at the time. He is said to have received a bonus for the World Championship gold medal, but Lochner would have been left empty-handed if he had won the silver medal.
