Jacqueline Lölling wins silver ahead of Sophia Griebel with bronze
Whistler (RWH): Tina Hermann of Germany is the 2019 World Champion in the women’s skeleton. At the BMW IBSF World Championships in Whistler (CAN), the overall winner of the 2016 World Cup recorded the best time in three out of the four runs. By the end of the race, Tina Hermann had secured a 0.38-second lead over second place and her second World Championship title after her victory in 2016. The German athlete – who also won silver at the 2017 World Championships – has therefore drawn level with the current record-winning World Champion, Maja Pedersen, who won two golds and one silver for Switzerland in 2001, 2005 and 2007.
The silver medal in Whistler was awarded to last year’s winner, Jacqueline Lölling (GER). The Olympic silver medallist from PyeongChang 2018 set a new track record for Whistler Sliding Center (53.10 seconds) in the final heat and won her third World Championship medal after her silver medal from 2015.
In contrast, the bronze medal at the World Championships was awarded to an athlete winning her first ever single medal: Sophia Griebel (GER, 1.17 seconds back). The 28-year-old had already won World Championship gold with the GER 2 team at the end of the first week of competition in Whistler.
Junior World Champion Anna Fernstädtová (CZE) finished fourth in Whistler ahead of the overall World Cup winner Elena Nikitina of Russia in fifth place. Switzerland’s Marina Gilardoni completed the top six at the 2019 BMW IBSF World Championships.
Local hero Elisabeth Maier was Canada’s highest-ranking female skeleton athlete in Whistler, finishing in tenth place.
