Gassner in second and with silver, Grotheer takes bronze with World Cup rank three
St. Moritz (RWH) Skeleton athlete Martins Dukurs from Latvia is the 2022 European Champion and overall World Cup winner in the 2021/2022 Olympic winter. The 37-year-old raced to his twelfth European Championship title and eleventh overall victory in the BMW IBSF World Cup since 2010 with his third win of the season at the BMW IBSF World Cup final in St. Moritz (SUI).
On the Olympic Bobrun St. Moritz-Celerina, Dukurs was 0.45 seconds ahead of Alexander Gassner (GER) for his 61st World Cup victory. World Champion Christopher Grotheer (GER, 0.51 seconds back) finished third. In this order, the three athletes also secured the medals at the 2022 Skeleton European Championships: Gold went to Martins Dukurs, silver to Alexander Gassner and bronze to Christopher Grotheer. For Gassner it was the second European Championship medal after bronze in 2021, for Christopher Grotheer it was the first.
Defending champion Alexander Tretiakov from Russia, the 2021 European Champion, came eighth in St. Moritz this time. Team-mate Nikita Tregubov (RUS), the Olympic silver medallist in PyeongChang 2018, achieved his best result of the season at the end of the BMW IBSF World Cup in fourth place.
For the eleventh time, the crystal globe trophy for the overall World Cup victory in the 2021/2022 BMW IBSF World Cup thus goes to Martins Dukurs (LAT, 1623 points). Overall second is Axel Jungk (GER, 1551 points), who finished fourth in St. Moritz tied with Nikita Tregubov. World Champion Christopher Grotheer (GER, 1547) finished third overall just behind his German team mate Jungk.
