Königssee (RWH) Former skeleton athlete and coach Johann "Luxi" Luxemburger (GER) passed away at the beginning of August at the age of 85. The International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation IBSF mourns the loss of an athlete who was closely associated with the sport of skeleton and who supported and accompanied many small and aspiring nations as a coach.
Luxi Luxemburger, born on 1 January 1937, was instrumental in building up the German sport of skeleton after the opening of the first artificial ice track at Königssee. From 1969 to 1972 he was an active skeleton athlete himself until a car accident at a mountain race, his second sporting passion, ended his active career. Later, Johann Luxemburger worked closely with the German national skeleton team as a coach, race director and organiser, and in the 1990s he was a coach for nations such as Monaco, the Virgin Islands, the Netherlands and Great Britain. His motivation: to bring the sport of skeleton back into the Olympic programme. ©RWH2022
