Olympic Champion Grotheer wins silver ahead of Axel Jungk with the bronze medal
Altenberg (RWH) Gold for Great Britain: Matt Weston (GBR) won the 2023 European Championships in men's skeleton in Altenberg (GER). At the BMW IBSF World Cup, for the starters from Europe also counted as European Championships, Matt Weston celebrated his third season's victory and the first European Championship title in the discipline for Great Britain since 2008, when Kristan Bromley won in Cesana (ITA).
European Championships silver and World Cup rank two went to Olympic and World Champion Christopher Grotheer (GER, 0.35 seconds back) in Altenberg. Olympic silver medallist Axel Jungk (GER, 0.38 seconds back) finished third and won European Championship bronze.
Austin Florian from the USA, surprisingly third after the first race run, dropped back to fourth in the second run but still celebrated his best World Cup result. The last U.S. medal winner in men's skeleton was on the starting line as coach with Austin Florian: Matt Antoine last won a medal in men's skeleton for the U.S. team in Lake Placid in December 2016.
In the overall ranking for the 2022/2023 BMW IBSF World Cup, two-time World Champion Christopher Grotheer (GER, 1264 points) defended his lead after six of eight season races with his second place in Altenberg. Marcus Wyatt (GER, 1169 points), fifth in Altenberg, remains second overall. New European Champion Matt Weston (GBR, 1155) moved up to third place with his World Cup victory.
